Ultrafiltration membranes are made of various polymer materials and are used to retain substances of different molecular weights. Ultrafiltration membranes retain various particles, colloids, organic matter, bacteria, pyrogens and other substances, but cannot retain inorganic ions.

Ultrafiltration relies on the porosity of the membrane and separates macromolecules. The reasons why macromolecular solutes are easily retained are as follows:

a. Adsorption on the membrane surface and in the micropores;

b. Retention in the pores and removal;

c. Mechanical retention on the membrane surface.
