Membrane bioreactor (MBR) is a mature process that uses submerged membrane separation technology to treat wastewater. This technology eliminates the need for traditional sedimentation tanks and allows for higher volumetric loading, thus reducing the space occupied by the equipment. MBR can effectively remove most of the BOD5, remove phosphorus and nitrogen, and completely remove TSS.

Membrane bioreactors are currently widely used in secondary wastewater treatment to recover wastewater for reuse as reclaimed water for daily flushing, saving water resources.
